In a groundbreaking development for Africa’s tech industry, Nigerian startup SolarNova Technologies has launched the first locally-manufactured solar-powered smartphone, aimed at solving power-related connectivity issues in rural and underserved communities.

The device, called “Nova One,” features:

  • A built-in solar panel on the back for off-grid charging
  • 10-hour battery life on a single full solar charge
  • Dual SIM capability
  • Local language options including Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo
  • A competitive price of ₦45,000 ($55 USD)

At the launch event in Lagos, CEO Chinwe Eze said the phone is designed β€œfor real Nigerians β€” students, traders, and rural workers who often lack reliable access to electricity.”

The Nova One has already attracted attention from international investors and NGOs focused on digital inclusion and sustainable tech.
