Scientists at the University of Ibadanβs Faculty of Science have discovered a promising new compound in a local plant species that may offer a breakthrough in diabetes treatment.
The plant, known locally as “EwΓ© Ayan”, has long been used in traditional medicine. Recent laboratory tests conducted by a team of pharmacologists and biochemists revealed that an extract from its leaves significantly lowers blood glucose levels in diabetic rats β without causing harmful side effects.
Dr. Tunde Adebayo, the lead researcher, explained the discovery:
βWeβve isolated a bioactive compound with insulin-like properties. It interacts directly with glucose metabolism pathways in the liver and muscles.β
π§ͺ Key Research Findings:
- The compound reduced blood sugar levels by over 40% in test subjects.
- No organ toxicity observed over a 60-day study period.
- Early clinical trials on humans are expected to begin in 2026, pending regulatory approval.
The research team is now collaborating with the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) to further study the plantβs properties and develop it into an affordable, natural-based treatment.
Health experts say this discovery reinforces the value of indigenous knowledge and local biodiversity in global scientific advancement.
