The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in 12 states across the country over the next five days.
According to the agency, satellite imagery and ground observations indicate a build-up of storm systems over the central and southern regions of Nigeria, with particularly intense activity expected in areas already experiencing saturated soils.
π Affected States:
Benue, Kogi, Niger, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo.
Dr. Mansur Danjuma, NIMETβs Director of Weather Forecasting, urged residents to take precautionary measures:
βPeople living in flood-prone communities should avoid waterways, secure property, and follow local emergency instructions closely. We are working with disaster agencies to ensure a timely response.β
The warning comes as seasonal rains continue across much of the country, raising concerns about flash floods, erosion, and damage to roads and farmlands.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been placed on alert, while local governments are being advised to activate early warning systems and evacuation plans where necessary.
Farmers are also being advised to monitor weather updates closely to avoid crop losses.
